As the COVID-19 crisis continues to evolve, along with the restrictions placed on social gatherings here in Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial (WLEM) Board of Directors has decided to cancel the 2020 Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony.
The WLEM Board understands how heartbreaking this news is for you. Please note that the names previously approved for inclusion on the WLEM (2020 Honor Roll) will still be engraved on the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial this year. Those officer’s respective departments as well as their next of kin are in the process of being personally notified of this decision. The specific date for the engraving is unknown at this time, but usually happens sometime in late April when the weather improves. There will be an additional press release at that time, which will include the 2020 Honor Roll. The WLEM Board has decided that during the 2021 WLEM Ceremony, scheduled for Friday, May 7, 2021, the 2020 honor roll will be read as part of a 2020-2021 Honor Roll.
It goes without saying but these are unprecedented times for all of us and this was a very difficult decision for the WLEM Board. This decision falls in line with the decision to cancel National Police Week public gatherings in Washington D.C. We all need be a part of the solution, although it was an undesired decision, it was necessary to keep everyone safe and hope for a quick resolution to this pandemic. You have the WLEM Board's promise that the sacrifices of the officers included in this year’s honor roll, as well as those already engraved on this Sacred Memorial, will not be forgotten and will receive the honor they so greatly deserve!
