    Incident Surrounding Death
    Carl Johnson and Fred Scott were deputized as members of the Sawyer County Sheriff's posse tracking a subject, who while driving a car with stolen plates, had fled from a Sawyer County Traffic Officer two days before. On June 17, 1939 the subject was located in a cabin and believed to be unarmed. Carl Johnson was shot and killed when he entered the cabin with the Sheriff to arrest the subject. Fred Scott was shot and killed in the gunfight that followed. The suspect escaped. An extensive manhunt followed and the suspect was killed in another gunfight several days later.
