Harris was on the way to Elroy to pick up a robbery suspect when he learned of another robbery and encountered the suspect on the train. The suspect drew a pistol and shot the Sheriff three times when Harris tried to restrain the suspect. The suspect was believed to have also killed Officer Fred Stevens in Havre MT on May 16, 1904.
